Unsung Hero
The Children's Board of Oswego has been presenting the Unsung Hero Award for 14 years, in order to recognize an individual who has truly made a difference in the quality of children's lives.
The people who have been recognized in the past are people in schools, churches, neighborhoods, and community groups. They all have had one thing in common - they are bettering the lives of children and families in Oswego County.
The past recipients have chosen to make children a priority, and are dedicated to fighting bias, substance abuse and violence, among other concerns of our youth. These individuals have taken children seriously, they have taught young people to help themselves, and they have helped build their self-confidence.
Some of the past recipients have included:
- A foster mom to 64 children
- An organizer of a youth soccer program
- An organizer of a youth basketball program
- Directors of a children's theater program
- Coordinator of a high school tutoring center
- Special education teacher
- Local business owner focusing on teenage youth
Children's board makes a donation to the recipients charity of choice as a way of honoring them and their efforts.

"One hundred years from now
It will not matter what my bank account was,
Or the sort of house I lived in
Or the kind of car I drove
But the world may be different because
I was important in the life of a child"
